Logs that span the stream serve several functions. The can pin other logs down so that they are immobile. They can slow down the stream torrents of the winter allowing for aggregates to precipitate out. The will gradually decay from the ends first assuring that the log will land in the stream in a time delay fashion thus ensuring long term habitat.
