Here you have a very old log barrier. See how it retains gravel even though it is split in half. The log was placed by natural processes in an old growth forest. Notice also the deep scour pool to the left of the barrier. When water passes through the gravel bed it is purified and cooled. This is what log placement is destined to be when the structure matures.
