Periodically at strategic points along the stream extra heavy logs and very large boulders are used to create what are known as pinning structures. These unique and essential configurations of rock and wood serve not on as habitat but also as tools to impede a washout of stream structures above them in case of a catastrophic flash flood or “rain on snow” flooding event. Ground based equipment excels in creating this type of engineered structure.
